The special rapporteur visited Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Fredericton and Halifax to learn about measures being taken to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Whether or not one believes in euthanasia for those who want it as a public good, one should consciously support high quality assisted living policies that offer maximum patient control and conform as much as possible to the individual’s needs as an equally worthy and valued right. A terminally ill Canadian man is suing his hospital, several governmental agencies and the attorneys general of Ontario and Canada after he claims he was denied proper medical care and offered assisted suicide instead. Roger Foley, 42, suffers from cerebellar ataxia, a neurodegenerative disease that limits his motor skills and ability to speak. In the lawsuit filed Feb. 14, Mr. Foley claims home-care providers selected by the government have caused him ill health, injury and inconvenience. Published March 19th 2018

Assisted life, no. Assisted death, yes. Are these isolated cases? Or are they the tip of the iceberg? Genuine, comprehensive monitoring could help us know. But it’s not in place.
